October 2026 marks the beginning of ARTE TOKYO, a new international arts and culture festival taking place throughout the city.
Running from October 10 through December 31, the inaugural festival will center on three major areas: the Waterfront Area, Hibiya-Marunouchi, and Yoyogi-Shibuya. The program brings together contemporary art, architecture, illumination, performances, and entertainment.
Rather than being confined to a single museum or exhibition hall, ARTE TOKYO encourages visitors to experience art throughout Tokyo. The festival includes large-scale public artworks, the ARTE TOKYO CIRCUS, partner programs throughout the city, and a special nighttime art project at Hama-rikyu Gardens.

Experience Tokyo Yosakoi in Ikebukuro
If you want to experience the energy of a Japanese festival, head to Ikebukuro on October 10 and 11 for Tokyo Yosakoi.
The event is the October finale of Fukuro Matsuri, an annual festival that has become an autumn tradition in Ikebukuro. Around 5,000 dancers representing approximately 100 teams gather throughout the neighborhood, performing energetic routines in colorful costumes accompanied by regional folk music.
Yosakoi is a relatively modern form of Japanese festival dance that originated in Kochi Prefecture in the postwar period. Today, performances can be found throughout Japan, with different groups incorporating local music, costumes, choreography, and creative themes.
The finale on October 11 brings all of the performers together, making it particularly exciting for visitors who want to experience the scale and enthusiasm of the festival. Viewing the performances is free.

Taste the Flavors of Tokyo at TASTE of TOKYO
Food lovers should make time for TASTE of TOKYO, officially known as Tokyo Ajiwai Festa (東京味わいフェスタ, Tokyo food festival), from October 23 to 25.
The festival celebrates Tokyo’s agriculture and food culture across areas including Marunouchi, Yurakucho, Hibiya, and Toyosu. Visitors can sample dishes made with ingredients produced in Tokyo, browse agricultural products and regional specialties, and explore special menus offered by nearby restaurants.
The event is also an opportunity to discover a side of Tokyo that can be easy to overlook. Although the capital is famous for restaurants serving food from throughout Japan and around the world, Tokyo itself has its own agricultural products and culinary traditions.
Admission is free, although food and drinks cost extra.

Browse a Million Books at the Kanda Used Book Festival
If you enjoy books, head to Jimbocho for the 66th Kanda Used Book Festival, taking place from October 23 through November 1.
Jimbocho is famous as Tokyo’s book district, with rows of specialty and secondhand bookstores covering everything from literature and history to manga, art, cooking, and Japanese culture. During the festival, bookshelves and temporary stalls line Yasukuni-dori, the main street, creating a massive outdoor marketplace.
Around one million books are expected to be available, making this one of the largest secondhand book markets in Japan. The Tokyo Used Book Hall also hosts special sales of rare and valuable books, along with talks and other events.
The festival is also a great excuse to explore the neighborhood itself. Stop at a traditional kissaten (喫茶店, Japanese-style coffee shop), browse the bookstores, and grab a bowl of curry or soba before continuing your literary treasure hunt.

Experience the Tokyo Grand Tea Ceremony
For travelers interested in Japanese culture, the Tokyo Grand Tea Ceremony is one of October’s standout events.
The 2026 edition takes place from October 24 to November 1 at two historic locations: the Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum in Koganei and Hama-rikyu Gardens in central Tokyo.
The event includes tea ceremony demonstrations, workshops, performances, and other activities designed to introduce visitors to Japanese tea culture. You do not need previous experience with the tea ceremony to participate. The event welcomes first-time visitors as well as people already familiar with the tradition.
