Mt. Fuji
Gotemba is perhaps best known for its panoramic views of Mt. Fuji. You can enjoy the mountain from the city center itself or if you’re feeling more adventurous, why not tackle the Gotemba Trail?
The least traveled of the Mt. Fuji climbing trails, the Gotemba Trail is truly off-the-beaten-path and is the perfect choice if you’re looking for a peaceful climb up the iconic mountain. Starting from Gotemba 5th Station, which is around 1400m above sea level, the ascent takes around seven to ten hours so make sure you’re prepared and take plenty of water!
If you’d rather save your energy, driving the scenic route along the Tōmei Kōsoku Dōro (Tōmei Expressway) may be more your style. This long expressway runs all the way down Honshu from Tokyo, passing through Gotemba and offers picturesque views of the mountain, as well as the surrounding rural landscape.

Lake Higashiyama
Though technically man-made, this beautiful lake is a hotspot for outdoor activities in Gotemba – plus an unmissable view of Mt. Fuji. Located to the south-east of Gotemba’s city center, the Lake Higashiyama area is a mecca for hiking, camping, and even sports-fishing. With each season offering something different, cherry blossoms in the spring; lush greenery in the summer; and the burnt orange changing of leaves in the fall, you’ll be left with an unforgettable experience no matter when you go.

Komakado Kazaana Caves
Enter the world of the Komakado Kazaana Caves, a stretch of lava tunnels near the base of Mt. Fuji. Enjoy the cool, crisp underground air of the tunnels as you walk within the glossy walls and marvel at the grooved floor, carved by lava that once flowed beneath your feet. Taller visitors may want to beware as the low ceiling requires you to crouch in places, but we think a scuffed knee or two is worth it to experience the wonder and mystery of these ancient caves. Seikoen Lava Garden
This lush botanical sanctum is a must-visit for fans of the traditional Japanese garden. Featuring a thick forest and exquisite florals, the Seikoen Lava Garden will let you relax and embrace the tranquility of your natural surroundings. Pay your respects at the Tainai Shrine, set within the grounds of the garden or enjoy one of the many seasonal festivals such as the Cherry Blossom Festival in the spring or the Maple Festival in the fall.

Chichibunomiya Memorial Park
This simple but exquisitely designed memorial park was once the summer home for the Japanese imperial family. Explore the park’s grounds featuring plentiful plant life including local varieties of hydrangeas, lilies, and tulips – and if you manage to visit in spring, the perfectly groomed cherry blossom trees are truly a wondrous sight to behold. After checking out the beautiful summer house itself, make sure you stop by the traditional style tea room where you can enjoy a spot of lunch!

Former Kishi Residence
If peculiar architecture is more your thing, the Former Kishi Residence is the place to go. Once the private residence of former prime minister Kishi Nobusuke, this residence and its accompanying gardens were designed by architect Yoshida Isoya who incorporated a unique blend of modern architectural stylings and very traditional Japanese design. Wonder at the smooth transitions between modern uses of wood and vinyl and the classic Japanese design aspects of shōji (translucent sliding doors), tatami (woven straw mats), and tokonoma (indented alcoves).

Toraya Wagashi Outpost
Sample some fresh wagashi (traditional Japanese sweets) in this Toraya outpost in Gotemba. Known around Japan for its mouth-watering mochi (rice cake), manju (steamed buns filled with red bean paste), and dorayaki (red bean pancake), Toraya hand makes much of its wagashi at this outpost which are then sold around the country. Take a stroll around the bamboo grove and traditional architecture featured in the grounds and finish off by stopping at the Toraya café where you can try some of the freshly made sweets – don’t forget to take some home as an omiyage (souvenir)!
