Hello! Can you please introduce yourself?
My name is Shoran Ohba and I was born in Japan, and educated in Australia and the United States. I have taught calligraphy classes in California under a Cultural Exchange Artist Visa issued by the U.S. State Department. I have performed in Japan, the U.S., and Europe! I grew up under the influence of my grandfather, a Master Calligrapher. I graduated from the Japan Calligraphy Academy in Tokyo. I now teach classes in Shizuoka and Tokyo, Japan. I also design packages, interiors, and clothing among many other subjects.
Your grandfather owned his own studio, and you felt drawn to calligraphy after studying abroad. Could you share the moment when you truly fell in love with it and knew you wanted to pass it on to the next generation?
It’s the same now as it was in the past. It’s when I see the simple, yet beautiful scene of new tea leaves sprouting in a tea field. Or when I look at the wonderful handmade brushes, washi paper, ink stone, and beloved tools left by my grandfather. It’s also when I observe my current master’s authentic brushwork. These are the moments when I witness the beautiful aspects of Japan that remain but are gradually decreasing over the years.

Can you explain what Matcha Calligraphy is?
With this new style of calligraphy using 100% natural matcha that can’t be commercialized during the manufacturing process, you can enjoy the sense of sight, smell and natural color aging. Unlike ink, the color of matcha gradually changes over time. It resembles the transition between all four seasons in Japan. “Its fragility and beauty make you feel nostalgic.” It’s exactly ‘wabi-sabi.’
What was the inspiration for incorporating matcha into your calligraphy work?
When I was teaching calligraphy and performing as an artist in Europe and America, I found that people who couldn’t read kanji or hiragana were very enthusiastic about the spiritual aspects of the tradition and asked many questions. It was during this search for a way to make calligraphy enjoyable for those who didn’t share a common language that I found the inspiration.

People can book a MatchaSho experience through your website. Could you walk us through what a class would look like from start to finish?
1. Introduction: Learn history and essential calligraphy knowledge.
2. Demonstration: By watching the demonstration, you learn basic techniques from the instructor.
3. Let’s try! Now, let’s write your name or the characters that you choose. Make the final special hardboard paper and put that into a hanging roll for a souvenir. Afterwards, we take a picture together! You can ask any Calligraphy question if you wonder while drinking green tea or eating Green tea-flavored gelato. (90 mins)
What has been the most memorable reaction or feedback you’ve received from someone experiencing Matcha Calligraphy for the first time?
A student once sent me a photo of Matcha Calligraphy self-practice from her hotel during a business trip saying: “I love the scent of matcha and ink, so I make time for it to relax and rejuvenate. I find solace in the scent and color changes. Also, it’s wonderful that I can wash my brush in the sink.”

Can you describe your performances? What can attendees expect to see and experience during your live performance?
I perform with various themes depending on the event and sometimes collaborate with traditional musicians specializing in instruments such as shakuhachi (bamboo flute), koto (Japanese harp), and taiko drums. I write calligraphy and sometimes sumi-e (ink painting) to match the music and embrace the atmosphere of the venue, conveying the message I want to share at that moment. Attendees can experience the intense tension of the moment and the state of being immersed in the early summer’s essence.

You have Matcha Calligraphy kits available on your website for purchase, as well as group lessons online and in person! How do your group lessons work and what can students expect to learn?
The COVID pandemic forced us into lockdown, but the desire for connection and self-improvement flourished. Our ShodoXCulture virtual Shodo community brings together global-minded individuals through the pursuit of Shodo. Monthly virtual lessons are conducted in English and Japanese and provide support for students to practice, receive feedback, and share cultural experiences.

What upcoming projects or events are you most excited about?
I am currently working on creating matcha calligraphy art and setting up a system for it to be available for purchase both domestically and internationally. This October, I will be showcasing at a renowned art fair in Paris, France. I am excited to see how the world’s first and unique matcha calligraphy will be received by the people in Europe and what kind of reactions I will get. Additionally, I am looking forward to having a real session with my students in Paris, who have been attending my online classes since 2020.
