What do the stunning landscapes of Mt. Fuji, amazing shopping, and a relaxing onsen (japanese hot spring) experience all have in common? They’re all in the same place in Gotemba, Shizuoka.
On the more refined side of visiting Japan, it’s chock full of fantastic shopping opportunities, ranging from international luxury brands to one-off designers and artisans. It’s hard not to find something to put on the must-have list. That, coupled with first-class accommodations in the relaxing atmosphere available at an onsen resort makes for the perfect weekend getaway or a piece of the puzzle of a longer itinerary.
Hidden in plain sight at the Gotemba Premium Outlets, you’ll find Hotel CLAD, perched high atop the hill above the popular shopping venue’s newest “Hillside” area. Opened in December 2020, this modern, minimalist designed hotel is operated by Odakyu Hotels, a subsidiary of Odakyu Group, and is centered around one of Japan’s old guard railway companies, Odakyu Electric Railway, which will celebrate its centennial anniversary in 2023.
The first things visitors see upon entering the lobby, on the far side, are the stunning floor to ceiling windows framing the iconic peak. Rich wood and a minimal, yet unmistakably Japanese design creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
Rooms with a stunning picture window view of the mountain are available in various configurations. Continuing with the minimalist design, the rooms feature a slightly elevated bed platform and keep the focus on the view. The beds are slightly small by western standards, however they are quite comfortable. You’ll find a set of traditional lounge-wear for use anywhere in the hotel complex, as well as a tidy bag with towels for use in the adjacent onsen. The rooms also boast a variety of sundries on the separate vanity area, along with the separate toilet and combination standing shower with hand-held massage and rain-shower heads, featuring full size shower gel and shampoo/conditioner. “Forest View” rooms on the opposite side are available at a slightly reduced rate.
The modern looking exterior entrance, landscaped with traditional bamboo, serves both the hotel lobby, located to the right side, and the onsen spa area, which is available for day visits as well. So, even if you’re not staying over, a relaxing break during a hard day’s shopping is just the ticket. Only steps away from the Hillside shopping section and accessible via bridge from the parking structure.
When you enter the lobby of the onsen side, you immediately feel the calming warmth of the wood floors and dark open beams. In the relaxation area, you’ll find a variety of areas to sit and enjoy a light snack or beverage. There is also an extensive manga library and an area filled with private reading capsules and lofts.
The baths feature beautiful stone work and offer stunning views of the mountain. One of the most enjoyable features of the Konohana no Yu hot spring day spa are the private baths, available by the hour for couples or families. Walk down the secluded, private breezeway to your traditionally styled onsen room, with its outdoor bath and inviting indoor lounge area. Bring a meal from the cafe or just relax and enjoy the view in privacy.
All information regarding access, pricing, and operating hours is available on their well-executed English website. Free shuttle service is available between Gotemba Station and the Gotemba Premium Outlets welcome center. Hotel reservation packages are available directly or on most aggregator apps or websites. And be sure to try the free Mt. Fuji shopping selfie cam at the shuttle bus stop.
