Enjoy a walking food tour through the Nishiki Food Market, an area known to locals as the Kitchen of Kyoto as it plays a huge part in supporting the Kyoto food industry. Business has been conducted here for the past 400 years and with one of the richest culinary atmospheres in the world, you will have a chance to sample some of the freshest food of your life.
Your experience will include stops at family-owned stalls and shops which have stood the test of time. At a few of the stops, we will sample specialty products like tsukemono (vegetables from the surrounding mountains preserved in vinegar), yuuba (the world’s smoothest sashimi tofu made from the world-famous Kyoto mountain water), Kamaboko (seafood preserved in fish paste), Tako (Octopus with quail egg) and Macha Warabi Mochi (a special traditional sweet covered in ground tea leaves). During the tour, you will learn detailed information about the ingredients of different Japanese dishes, how their food is prepared, and what is used to eat it.
Your experience will do more than just give you a chance to taste Kyoto’s delicious food but will also give you a sense of the history and atmosphere of the Nishiki Market experienced by the Japanese for generations. You will be consumed with physical and visual stimuli every step of the way and will enjoy stories from the past told directly from shopkeepers and families we will spend time with. After your market exploration, you will walk to a nearby restaurant and have a course lunch featuring beautiful and delicious local dishes. We look forward to welcoming you to one of the most beloved tours in all of Japan and hope to see you soon.
*Please note, if our regular lunch restaurant is unavailable in peak season or on holidays we will substitute with equal quality and value traditional lunch restaurant in the area.

If you are a foodie, book the Nishiki Market Tour! Our guide was fantastic, with no quiet moments, every single minute of it was all about food, culture, and excellent flavors! Knowing so much about why food in Kyoto was so good really made such a big difference! This tour is a must, you will learn so much in 3 hours and sample a lot of stuff. The lunch was very delicious, what a great way to spend our first day in Kyoto! I can do this tour over and over again, amazing!
Please keep in mind, however, that we cannot make an allergy-free or dietary restriction food guarantee since food is prepared in kitchens that do not belong to Arigato Japan. Also, some stops may not have a viable substitution but we will make every effort to compensate at different stops throughout the tour.
