Coffee culture. Let’s talk about it. While it’s important to take note of and regulate your caffeine intake, there is a beauty to our modern day coffee culture. Going out for coffee isn’t just about getting that boost of energy, it can be an event. A way to chat with friends, a way to get out of the house whilst not stunting your productivity, a way to explore a new area. If you like any of these excuses, then coffee runs are likely a crucial part of your schedule and Tokyo, being one of the largest cities in the world, is far from short on places to go.
Streamer Coffee Company
One popular spot that has locations sprinkled throughout Tokyo is Streamer Coffee Company. Their famous “Free Pour” Lattes promise a beautiful design on your coffee which, according to their believed philosophy of the “effect of beauty on taste”, will not only elevate the taste of your drink, but also your overall experience.
On top of the beautiful latte art and the shop’s relaxed ambience, my experience there proved to be very foreigner friendly — so don’t be shy! With a strong WiFi network, it is a great place to sit for a few hours whether you’re chatting with friends or trying to get some work done.

Alpha Beta Coffee Club
If you’re in the Jiyugaoka area, make sure to stop by Alpha Beta Coffee Club. It is conveniently located right next to the train station and sits on the third floor which allows guests to separate themselves from the busy street below. Their interior is light and white, creating a relaxing environment that pairs well with their spacious patio area. whether they choose to sit inside or on their spacious patio. With their light and white interior, the Alpha Beta Coffee Club creates a relaxing environment for people to enjoy carefully brewed coffees, craft beers, as well as delicious snacks (both sweet and savory).

Harajuku’s Reissue
Want to put a little spin on your average latte? While there are a number of places where you could go to receive beautiful latte art or even a picture of yourself on your latte, Reissue in Harajuku offers 3D latte art that pairs especially nicely with the lively atmosphere of Takaeshita Dori.

Starbucks Reserve Roastery, Nakameguro
A Tokyo cafe roundup would not be complete without mentioning the infamous Starbucks Reserve Roastery in Nakameguro. While Starbucks in general is a reliable coffee option throughout the country, the Reserve Roastery is special. It’s more, with four floors of intricate interior design and terrace seating boasting a “complete and total commitment to the immersive experience of coffee craft”. Throughout the building, the sound of coffee beans being ground creates a background noise for people’s conversations. Moreover, they offer more than your typical cafe menu so you can find something to enjoy whether you’re craving coffees, cocktails, sweets or savory treats.

From tiny sidewalk stands to large sprawling starbucks to themed cafes to pet cafes, Tokyo offers an endless array of options for where to get your next coffee. In this article I’ve focused on more classic options where you can easily tackle a few hours of work or catch up with some friends. I’ve tried for more laid back options and yet, don’t think nothing of them as the effort put into pouring your drink is what I personally think makes the experience. It’s a dedication that I have found to be so unique to and reliable in Japan and one that out of towners are likely not to take for granted.
