History
The origin of these grounds goes all the way back to feudal Japan in 1625. Originally home to Kan’ei-ji Temple, the area was once strictly a place of worship. After the Feudal era and moving into the Meiji Restoration, this sacred site turned into the battleground for the Battle of Ueno. Japan at this time was divided between loyalists to the Tokugawa Shogunate and supporters of the Imperial Court (feudal power vs. the Emperor). During the conflict, authority shifted back to the Emperor and the main temple burned down. However, this destruction eventually paved the way for something new.
The area was converted, and Ueno Park became one of Japan’s very first public parks. In 1876, Emperor Meiji held an inauguration ceremony for the land, marking the beginning of its legacy under the name Ueno Park. Over the years, the location has expanded beyond a peaceful green landscape on old battlefields to express Japan’s heritage through the museums, zoo, and shrines we will explore today.

Temples
Since the park was originally a place of worship, it remains home to many sacred sites throughout the area. We will be discussing just a few, but there are seven temples and shrines tucked inside the grounds.
While the original Kaneiji Temple was burnt down during the war, small remains of this historic battleground still sit in a quiet corner of the park and can be visited today. The grandest structure currently within the park is Kiyomizu Kannon Temple. It stands as the largest building on site and boasts the most picturesque views thanks to its raised wooden platform.
The platform overlooks Shinobazu Pond, which leads us to our next spot, Bentendo. Situated on a small island in the middle of the pond, this temple honors Benzaiten, the goddess of wealth, music, and good fortune. Locals come here to pray and enjoy the scenic lookout structure, which gives you a great view across the water toward neighboring shrines.

Gojouten Shrine and Hanazono Inari Shrine sit right next to each other, but they worship entirely different gods. Gojouten Shrine is known for medicine and healing, holding a dedicated health festival on the tenth of every month to pray for well-being. Hanazono Inari Shrine is one of 30,000 shrines across Japan dedicated to the rice kami (spirit). Legend says that during its construction, the Tokugawa Shogunate received a dream from the rice deity instructing them to build it, and so they did! Now, these twin shrines of medicine and agriculture sit side-by-side.

Seasonal Festivities
Parks in Japan serve as vibrant stages for many seasonal festivals and events throughout the year. Depending on when you visit, you can get a firsthand look at how locals celebrate in Tokyo. The Ueno Cherry Blossom Festival kicks off in the spring, which then leads into a busy lineup of summer celebrations. The park hosts the Shitamachi Yume Matsuri, Natsu Matsuri, and Tohoku Summer Festival, to name a few.
On hot summer days, local museums open for late-night hours, offering a cool break from the Tokyo heat. Summer is also prime time for cultural exchange events inside the park. For summer 2026, the Taiwanese Festival and Philippine Expo are taking center stage, offering a wonderful cultural mix for international travelers.
In the autumn, you can enjoy seasonal exhibitions inside the Tokyo National Museum alongside the Chiyoda Autumn Festival. To end the year, the park hosts the Ameyoko year-end market, a huge food event where you can taste local street eats. No matter what month you arrive, a fresh event is always popping up for visitors to enjoy.

Museums Amidst the Green
The imagery of a public park usually entails green lawns and trees. However, Ueno bridges the gap between heritage, culture, and recreation through its world-class museum district. Everything is within comfortable walking distance, meaning you can easily spend a full afternoon taking in art and ancient artifacts.
A major highlight is the Tokyo National Museum, the oldest and largest art museum in Japan. Housing over 120,000 artifacts, architecturally distinct buildings, and peaceful surrounding gardens, visiting here is a full cultural experience rather than a simple gallery walk. With ever-changing exhibits, there is always a reason to come back on every trip to Japan. Walking the entire grounds takes about 2 to 3 hours, so come prepared for an immersive visit inside a historic landmark.
