Known as a “gathering place for food professionals” and a hotspot for tourists, Tsukiji Market is a full food experience. Not only can you taste a multitude of street food, you can buy whole fish as it also functions as a fish market, and also learn how to prepare traditional Japanese dishes.
Tsukiji’s tourist sites recommend that you get there as soon as they open at 7am and start the morning at Namiyoke Inari Shrine. From there, venture into the market to experience some of the freshest fish Tokyo has to offer. Located in Shinjuku, Omoide Yokocho is a narrow alley full of street food, a perfect way to end your night drinking and eating with friends! Developed pre World War II, Omoide Yokocho is a twisting alley with over 60 plus izakayas created by the food stalls that came before the ruin of the war. Most of the izakayas offer yakitori, eel, oden, and of course drinks. Even if food offerings might be similar, each place has its own vibe and flavor creating a diverse community to end your night eating hearty Japanese food. Since most spaces are small, there is often a cover or seat charge to enter each individual establishment. Flash photography is highly advised against and any form of photography or filming is often restricted altogether.

Not only does Asakusa have the infamous Sensoji Temple, but it also has a wide variety of street food stalls for visitors. From sweets, meat, ramen, and sushi, the side streets surrounding Sensoji Temple have a variety of Japanese cuisine to satisfy your cravings. A notable and famous snack on these streets is melon pan, a crunchy outside texture filled with melon cream on the inside. Many stalls have this snack and even offer different flavors from custard to matcha. Asakusa is also famous for its menchi katsu snack, minced meat cutlets made from pork. With a crunchy texture and a rich meaty filling, these cutlets are fried right in front of you, hot and ready. In the alleys on the Northside of Kichijoji lies Harmonica Yokocho, a street food area that is busy day and night. During the day, there are clothing and street food vendors, but at night it transforms into a lively drinking and dining hub. This area still carries the post-war Showa aesthetic, as it used to be a black market after World War II, and still instills this historical atmosphere. From old to young, there are over 100 izakayas, and each little space has its own individual characteristics. Make sure to get here early, as the standing bars are small, and they fill up quickly with locals.

Known as the “Cat Street” of Tokyo, Yanaka Ginza is the perfect area to escape from the hustle of Shinjuku and Shibuya, but experience authentic Tokyo street food. People travel here for the various cat-themed snacks and the old town atmosphere. This area is well-known for its sweets and also senbei. Senbei are rice crackers that have different flavors and coatings, with many shops in Yanaka selling them.
